Maximize return on investment

Amazon reserved instances allow you to make a one-time payment to Amazon in return for a discount on your compute costs. The rationale for reserved pricing is simple: by getting customers to commit to the usage of specific infrastructure, Amazon can better manage their capacity and pass these savings on to customers. Customers who fully leverage this feature can achieve up to 60% savings on their compute costs. But leveraging RIs comes with a significant administrative overhead. What instance types should you purchase? What term should you commit to? Should you purchase Heavy, Medium or Light reservations? Should you purchase from the marketplace? How will you know if you are effectively using your reservations? These and many more questions can be answered with CloudHealth’s RI Management.

Report on Amortization Cost by Purchase and Usage

Accounting for reservations has never been easier. CloudHealth’s enhanced amortization reports give you the ability to account for amortization by both purchase and usage.

The CloudHealth platform simplifies reporting for amortized cost by performing the heavy lifting for you. We analyze and evaluate your reservations including: no-upfront, partial-upfront, all-upfront, modifications, as well as all contractual terms. With a single click, you can report on current or historical costs including amortization.

Report on amortization cost by EC2, RDS, Redshift, and Elasticache reservation purchases by account, region or even instance type.

Report on amortization cost by reservation usage across Perspectives and functional business groups to get a more complete picture of actual usage. This includes the float of reservations within an account, as well as across multiple accounts within a consolidated bill.

Purchase Reserved Instances

The CloudHealth RI Optimizer simplifies the process of purchasing reserved instances. By choosing a time window in which to analyze usage, setting a date for a purchase, and choosing a prepay amount, CloudHealth can recommend the absolute optimum purchase for your environment. The recommendation uses a computer science algorithm called the “greedy knapsack” that compares all possible combinations to achieve an optimum outcome. Our recommendations takes into account variables such as historical usage, reservation types, tiered discounts, enterprise pricing, expiring reservations, and more. The Optimizer even allows you to view what your infrastructure will look like after the purchase, and export your purchase order.

Optimize Existing Purchases

Reserved instances get applied on an hourly basis by randomly evaluating the available reservations and running instance usage. If your operations team moves an instance to a new availability zone, shuts down running instances, or changes a workload to a different instance type, your reservation investment can be at risk. CloudHealth actively monitors your usage and makes recommended moves to ensure your reserved instance purchases are always fully optimized.

Reserved Instance Pulse

The CloudHealth Reserved Instance Utilization Pulse is designed to provide you with a detailed operational and financial overview of your reserved instance investment. This pulse can be configured to be sent directly to key stakeholders on a schedule, in order to provide transparency to the health of your RI usage. The report is a collection of several tools across our RI management suite, and enables you to better manage usage based on historical trends, identify opportunities for RI savings, and highlight changes you can make to optimize your compute costs.

Alert on Reservation Underutilization

CloudHealth provides a powerful alerting feature to allow you to be notified of conditions that adversely impact the cost, availability, performance and security of your cloud infrastructure. To support your reservation management, you can set alerts on underutilized reservations. By choosing a cost or volume threshold, you can be proactively notified of underutilization within your RI investment. The alert will even provide you the precise details on affected reservations, the number of hours unused, and the total lost savings.

Support for Multiple Accounts

For an Operations or IT Finance manager, controlling the cost and usage of your AWS cloud infrastructure across multiple services and projects can be a headache at the best of times. But if you are responsible for a large enterprise, you likely have the additional challenge of managing multiple accounts that must all be aggregated to get a true accounting of cost or usage. CloudHealth allows you to aggregate and report on the cost and usage of all your accounts - including multiple consolidated, linked and standalone accounts. You can enter the accounts in CloudHealth manually or through a bulk import, where they will automatically be scanned and consolidated. CloudHealth gives you a true consolidation reporting solution for your infrastructure and allows you to perform enterprise-wide cost and usage optimization analysis.

View Usage By Instance

The Instance Hour Report allows you to view your usage of instances over a billing period. This report provides you the costs incurred by each instance, the total number of hours run, and how many hours this instance was run under a reservation. The data is available for a year, providing you a complete historical record of all instances, their use and their exact costs. You can analyze and filter this data by business perspective.
