Lift-and-Shift Cloud Strategies Can Be Costly

According to a study last year by Forrester Research and cloud-cost management firm CloudHealth Technologies, less than 40% of firms meet or exceed their goals related to both cloud migration and run costs. More than half of the firms it reviewed said costs of running workloads in the cloud were higher than estimated.

Companies that migrate workloads “as-is” to the cloud – a strategy known as lift and shift – run the risk of losing most, or even all, of the hoped-for savings of winding down costly on-premise data centers, Bain & Co. reports.

It estimates that more than 80% of on-premise enterprise workloads are overprovisioned, meaning they have more compute power, memory and storage than they will ever need to operate.
